BIOGRAPHY

Biography

Early Life and Entry into the Princely Court

Zheng Achun was born into the eminent Zheng clan of Xingyang. Her grandfather Zheng He served as Grand Administrator of Anfeng, and her father Zheng Kai was a Gentleman of the Masters of Writing. Orphaned at a young age and having lost her first husband early in life, she sought refuge with maternal kin in Jiankang during the upheavals of northern China. In 317 CE, when Sima Rui served as the Prince of Langya and Prime Minister in Jiankang, he noticed Zheng Achun's refined conduct and graceful presence, subsequently welcoming her into his inner household as a favored consort.

Life as Imperial Lady in Eastern Jin

Following Sima Rui's formal enthronement as Emperor Yuan of Jin in 318 CE, he ennobled Zheng Achun with the rank of Imperial Lady (Furen). Although Emperor Yuan had lost his primary consort Lady Yu before crossing the Yangtze River, he declined to install a new empress, leaving Lady Zheng as the most prominent feminine figure within the palace. She bore two sons, Sima Huan and Sima Yu, as well as Princess Xunyang. Her youngest son, Sima Yu, was exceptionally cherished by Emperor Yuan. Despite her high station, Lady Zheng remained remarkably circumspect, showing special concern for her younger sisters and persuading the emperor to arrange respectable matrimonial alliances for her impoverished relatives.

Princely Dowager and Posthumous Elevation

Following Emperor Yuan's demise in 323 CE, Emperor Ming (Sima Shao) inherited the throne, and Lady Zheng moved into the princely residence of her young son Sima Yu, adopting the rank of Princess Dowager. She died peacefully in 326 CE during the early Xianhe era. Decades later, following dynastic transitions, her son Sima Yu ascended the imperial throne as Emperor Jianwen (r. 371–372 CE). In 394 CE, during the reign of her grandson Emperor Xiaowu (Sima Yao), court scholars resolved imperial ancestral protocol and formally elevated Zheng Achun with the posthumous title of Empress Dowager Jianwen, placing her ancestral tablet beside Emperor Yuan in the imperial ancestral temple.
