Early Life and Service under the Erzhu Clan
Helian Meng hailed from Changli Commandery, claiming descent from northern pastoralist lineages. Endowed with notable physical stature, martial courage, and cavalry tactics, he entered military service during the chaotic twilight of Northern Wei. In 530 CE, following Emperor Xiaozhuang's assassination of Erzhu Rong, Helian Meng served under Erzhu Shilong, assisting in the military mobilization around the central Yellow River theater.
Allegiance to Gao Huan and Eastern Wei Campaigns
In 532 CE, recognizing the impending collapse of the Erzhu coalition, Helian Meng joined Husi Chun and other commanders in defecting to Gao Huan at Yecheng. Gao Huan enthusiastically welcomed his allegiance, appointing him to frontline cavalry commands. Helian Meng participated in the decisive Battle of Hanling against Erzhu Zhao, being enfeoffed as Count of Shi'an for his combat exploits. In 538 CE, during the massive collision between Eastern Wei and Western Wei forces at Mount Mang, Helian Meng fought fiercely in the vanguard, repulsing western heavy infantry and securing promotion to Marquis.
Meritorious Service and Elevation in Northern Qi
Upon the founding of the Northern Qi dynasty by Gao Yang (Emperor Wenxuan) in 550 CE, Helian Meng was rewarded with an elevation to Duke and given high commands within the inner imperial guard, serving as Grand General of the Palace Guards (Ling Zuoyou Da Jiangjun) and Supervisor of Imperial Household Attendants (Guangluxun). Known for his vigilance and political loyalty, he successfully navigated the succession struggles of emperors Xiaozhao and Wucheng. In 565 CE, he was granted the honorific rank of Specially Advanced (Tejin), Opening Office Equal to the Three Privies (Kaifu Yitong Sansi), and enfeoffed as Prince of Nanyang Commandery.
