LIFE TIMELINE
BIOGRAPHY
Biography
Classical Learning and Frontier Command
Shen Ying hailed from Yuyao in Kuaiji. Born into an educated southeastern gentry family, he combined military strategic aptitude with scholarly curiosity regarding physical terrain, flora, and ethnography. During the reign of Sun Hao, he was entrusted with the crucial command of Danyang, a mountainous region celebrated for producing ferocious mountain warriors. Shen trained a disciplined vanguard known as the "Blue Turbans," which never broke under cavalry charges.
Compilation of Lin Hai Shui Tu Zhi
While administering the coastal commanderies, Shen systematically collected mariners' records and observed regional flora, oceanic currents, and island cultures. In his Lin Hai Shui Tu Zhi, Shen documented the topography and anthropology of Yizhou (modern Taiwan). He noted that the island lay east of Linhai without frost or snow, described indigenous bamboo habitations, and chronicled iron tools, maritime navigation, and community festivals. His text remains the foundational Chinese archival source on Taiwan.
The Last Stand at Banqiao
In early 280 CE, Western Jin deployed six massive converging armies to conquer Eastern Wu. As Jin forces under Wang Hun and Wang Jun swept past frontier outposts, Chancellor Zhang Ti and Shen Ying led a desperate counter-strike across the Yangzi with 30,000 troops. At the Battle of Banqiao, Shen's Blue Turbans charged the Jin lines three times, shaking the enemy vanguard. However, regional Jin cavalry encircled the flanks, while surrendered Wu detachments collapsed the center. Shen refused to retreat and was slain in combat alongside Zhang Ti.
