LIFE TIMELINE
BIOGRAPHY
Biography
The records preserve little about Chen Zhaoyu's childhood. They place him in a medical family in Nanhai, where local plants and southern remedies would have been part of his practical training. When the Song conquered Southern Han in 971, Chen accompanied Liu Chang to Kaifeng. The change of regime turned a physician attached to a defeated court into a member of the new dynasty's medical establishment.
Chen was appointed a Hanlin medical official and was repeatedly praised for treatments that produced results. The description of him as a “divine physician” should be read as a contemporary expression of professional reputation, not as a claim of supernatural power. A passage saying that he did not read books emphasizes his reliance on clinical practice and accumulated cases. It does not mean that he lacked all medical learning; it distinguishes the bedside experience that officials considered especially valuable.
In 973 the court ordered Chen, Liu Han, and Ma Zhi to revise the Kaibao Materia Medica. The work compared older pharmacological texts, corrected names and properties, and organized information that could be used by physicians and officials. A further revision in 974 expanded the work to 983 drugs. Chen's knowledge of southern substances was useful in a project that sought to make the empire's medical vocabulary more consistent.
In 978 he joined Wang Huaiyin and other physicians in compiling formulae for the imperial household and the wider population. The resulting Taiping Shenghui Fang was completed in 992, contained one hundred volumes, and became one of the major medical compilations of the Song. Chen's individual contributions cannot always be separated from those of his colleagues, but his participation connects the court's pharmacological project with its effort to preserve tested treatments. His later life and death are not recorded in detail.

Personal Relations
- Liu Chang: Former Southern Han ruler whom Chen accompanied to the Song capital.
- Liu Han and Ma Zhi: Colleagues in the Kaibao Materia Medica project.
- Wang Huaiyin, Wang You, and Zheng Qi: Colleagues in the Taiping Shenghui Fang compilation.
- The Northern Song court: Patron and institutional setting for his medical work.
Historical Assessment
Song medical histories remembered Chen for effective treatment and practical experience. Later scholars valued his involvement in texts that became standard references for pharmacology and formulae, while recognizing that these were collective court compilations rather than single-author works. Modern history of medicine places him among the physicians who helped transform local and court knowledge into standardized state texts. His biography is necessarily modest because the sources preserve his institutional work more fully than his private life.
